What
comes to your mind when you think of Miami? The beach? Miami Vice? Shaq?
These are sure to be found, but Miami has much more to offer than surf
and celebrities. Miami is full of people from all over the world seeking
status, education, security, and the American Dream. You will find people
who are like you and people who aren't. They all have a story to share:
- Jorge
came from Cuba with his mom when he was just two years old...in a boat,
and it wasn't the Royal Caribbean!
- Carlos
and his family fled South America after his father was kidnapped and
escaped.
- Darfin
is studying engineering at the University of Miami. His home in Africa
is 8,000 miles away.
- Jon
was born in Miami and is a freshman at Barry University. He had never
read the Bible before this year.
- Marline
was born in Haiti and raised in St. Martin. She started a Campus Crusade
club at her school three years ago and won "Club of the Year"
twice
Did
you know?
- Miami
is the second-most un-churched city in America. Only 15% of the population
is in church on Sunday.
- 50%
of Miami residents are born outside of the U.S.
- Miami-Dade
county is 60% Hispanic by population.
- 70%
of the Miami population does not speak English at home.
- Any
mail piece from the county government comes in three languages: English,
Spanish, and Creole.
- South
Florida is home to over 200,000 college students on over 50 campuses,
most of whom have never heard the Gospel!
Why
Miami?
- Take the
Gospel to students from all ove rthe world.
- Help build
upon a young movement at Florida International University, Miami's largest
school.
- Enjoy
an overseas experience without actually going overseas.
- Have
a unique opportunity to work with and be mentored by full-time Campus
Crusade staff.
- Have
a chance to learn the spanish language (and Salsa dancing).
- Endless
opportunities for fun: snorkeling in the Keys, professional and college
sports, and canoeing in the Everglades...
- The
beach! The weather! The beach!
Why
Florida International University?
- 33,000
students
- Less than
100 students involved in campus ministry.
- Largest
contingent of Hispanic students in the country.
- Vibrant
campus Greek Life.
What
will it take?
- A
willingness to trust God in life, ministry, and developing a financial
support team.
- A
desire to experience a new culture and work with a team.
